International Association for Promoting Geoethics Nigeria - Official blog

DESAME 2016: Day of Earth Sciences in Africa and Middle East.
The African Association of Women in Geosciences and the African Geoparks Network proclaim the 20th March as a "Day of Earth Sciences in Africa and Middle East, DESAME".
The day aims to increase the awareness about the role that earth scientists could play to help to build a peaceful, healthier and wealthier continent.
The 2016 theme is: "Geoethics, Geoheritage, Georesources & Geoenvironment".
First celebrated in 2013, DESAME is being celebrated in 2016.
The IAPG took part in DESAME 2014 (http://iapgeoethics.blogspot.it/…/celebration-of-desame-day…) and 2015 (http://iapgeoethics.blogspot.it/…/water-and-its-role-in-dev…) with events organized by its national section in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Even this year the IAPG is partner of DESAME and we wish to thank Ezzoura Errami (IAPG continental coordinator for Africa) for promoting this important event.
If you are willing to propose activities in your respective countries or online activities through your facebook groups, your blogs or your tweets, please join us to make this exciting experience a success.
Why the 20th March?
Equinoxes have been celebrated in cultures all over the world. In the northern hemisphere the March equinox marks the start of spring and has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth. The 20th March corresponds to the March equinox where night and day are nearly of the same length all over the world. However, even if this is widely accepted, it isn't entirely true. The March equinox occurs the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. This happens either on March 19, 20 or 21 every year. In that way, the activities, related to the DESAME, could be extended to the 19th and the 21st March.
Activities
Conferences, seminars, courses, presentations, field trips, exhibitions, films, games, visits of Earth Sciences departments, etc. It is up to you to create and innovate in order to answer the need of your respective societies.
Target public
Pupils from primary and secondary schools, students from universities, policy makers, large public, potential partners and sponsor. All the components of your respective societies.

International Association for Promoting Geoethics Nigeria

The International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) is a multidisciplinary, scientific platform for widening the debate and creating awareness about problems of Ethics applied to the Geosciences.
The IAPG is legally recognized as a not-for-profit association, has members in 96 countries in 5 continents, and can count on a network of 17 national sections.
The IAPG was born in August 2012, during the 34th International Geological Congress (IGC) in Brisbane (Australia), from an idea conceived on April 2012 during the session on Geoethics at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) - General Assembly in Vienna.
The IAPG is affiliated to the International Union of Geological Science (IUGS), is recognized as an International Associate Organization of the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and as an Associate Society of the Geological Society of America (GSA); has agreements of collaboration with the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), the International Geoscience Education Organisation (IGEO), the African Association of Women in Geosciences (AAWG), the African Network for Geo-Education (ANGE), the Italian Geological Society (SGI).

‪#‎Geoethics‬: AGREEMENT ON COOPERATION BETWEEN AAWG and IAPG.
The AAWG - African Association of Women in Geosciences and the IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics have signed an Agreement on Cooperation on 18 September 2015.
The agreement expresses a mutual desire to co-operate on a range of themes in the field of Geoethics. The aim of the agreement is to promote co-ordinated events discussing the ethical, social and cultural implications of geosciences and initiatives enhancing the role of women scientists in geosciences. In particular:
- promotion of principles of geoethics, research integrity and professional deontology in geosciences activities among their networks;
- definition of ethical problems, also through case-studies, affecting geoscience community and organizations;
- promotion of policies and initiatives to enhance the role of women scientists in geosciences;
- promotion of initiatives to promote activities for social inclusivity and enhance the role of geosciences in building peace;
- co-organization of scientific events to disseminate concepts and values of geoethics, among both the professional and research communities, with particular attention to the involvement of women and young geoscientists;
- production of relevant publications;
- identification of possibilities to apply for common projects on geoethics.
This agreement strenghtens the existing collaboration between the two associations, already experimented in the last editions of DESAME (the Day of Earth Sciences in Africa and the Middle East) 2014 (http://iapgeoethics.blogspot.it/…/celebration-of-desame-day…) and 2015 (http://iapgeoethics.blogspot.it/…/water-and-its-role-in-dev…).
Moreover, IAPG is partner of the 8th Conference of the African Association of Women in Geosciences (AAWG), that will take place in Sibiu (Romania) from 1 to 7 October 2016 (Title of the conference: "Building Bridges between Earth Scientists Worldwide: A Way for Promoting Peace and Strengthening Integration": more information about this conference in the page "Events" of the IAPG website:http://www.geoethics.org/events.html).
AAWG (http://www.aawg.org/) is an association born in Nairobi (Kenya) on 1995, created to promote Earth Sciences for Society through women and to promote women through Earth Sciences.
